The Personal Listening Profile is a 16-page self assessment instrument that helps people discover their natural communication and listening style.  Respondents discover the impact of different listening styles, including when to adopt another approach for more successful communication. 

The Personal Listening Profile helps individuals identify which of the five listening approaches they use:

• Appreciative: listens in a relaxed manner; seeks enjoyment, entertainment, or inspiration from interactions.
• Empathic: listens  without judgement; is supportive of the speaker and learns from the experiences others.
• Comprehensive: listens to organize and make sense of information; seeks to understand relationships among ideas.
• Discerning : listens to get complete and factual information and important details.
• Evaluative : listens in order to make a decision based on information provided; may accept, reject, or judge messages based on personal beliefs.

The Personal Listening Profile helps people understand the strengths of their most natural listening style and when it may be appropriate to adopt a different approach depending on the purpose of the communication.

The online (EPIC) version of the Personal Listening Profile provides all of the same elements as the paper-based instrument, plus highlights of one's strengths and growth areas for each listening style and specific suggestions for improvement.   The online EPIC version also includes a Communication Gap Analysis -- an at-a-glance look at how the respondent's listening style can impact the way a message is interpreted.  An enhanced action planning section encourages people to reflect on how their listening style interacts with that of others and helps them develop strategies for reducing miscommunication. 

The Personal Listening Profile Facilitator's Report provides insight into group dynamics by showing how group members use each listening approach.  At a glance, you'll see the similarities and differences within your group that can lead to miscommunication.  It also helps to see individuals whose scores fall outside of group averages and who may feel isolated or alientated by the dominant listening styles of the group culture.
